2025 Women in Construction: Trailblazers & Changemakers
On March 6, 2025, the Alhecama Theatre in Santa Barbara buzzed with energy as the Santa Barbara Contractors Association (SBCA) hosted its sold-out Women in Construction event. The night celebrated the invaluable contributions women have made to the construction and design industries in Santa Barbara County. This year’s theme, Trailblazers & Changemakers: Women Shaping Construction & Design, honored those driving lasting change in a historically male-dominated field. The event brought together a diverse group of professionals and leaders, each showcasing the power of creativity, collaboration, and leadership in shaping the future of construction in Santa Barbara.
Event Highlights: Inspiring Leadership and Innovation in Construction
The evening kicked off with a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception in the courtyard. Guests networked over small bites and drinks in a commemorative Wine Glass, while live music by Riviera Revival set the tone. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and empowerment, as attendees eagerly connected and engaged with one another.
The program featured keynote presentations from influential women in the community. Laura Capps, Chair of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, opened the evening by sharing insights into her career and discussing the County’s construction and housing landscape.
Following Capps’ remarks, Tina Dye, Chief Building Official for the City of Santa Barbara, shared her experiences working in city government and delivered an in-depth presentation on the future of building regulations in the area. She discussed key initiatives, including Electronic Inspection Requests, the Exterior Elevated Elements Program, ADU Legislation, Organizational Innovations, and Division Highlights.
The evening continued with a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Sherry Villanueva, founder of Acme Hospitality and a passionate community advocate. The panel featured four exceptional women in construction and design, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences:
Ashley Farrell talked about her landscaping business and how her team helps clients create meaningful outdoor spaces.
Shannon Scott shared her 25 years of experience as a designer, emphasizing trust and attention to detail in her work.
Jennifer Lewis, an architect, discussed her work blending classical and modern design, along with her efforts to mentor women in architecture.
